🚨 Did AGI just arrive? GPT-6 Astra has restarted the debate.
After OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra, some people in the AI world started calling this the beginning of the AGI era.
And you can understand why.
GPT-6 Astra scored 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3, reached 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4, and can autonomously handle increasingly complex tasks involving coding, research, browsers, computers and professional work.
OpenAI president Greg Brockman even said that AGI is a “gray, fuzzy thing” and suggested that, looking back, people may see this period and this model as the beginning of AGI.
But does that mean Astra is definitely AGI?
Not so fast.
OpenAI has historically defined AGI as highly autonomous AI that outperforms humans at most economically valuable work.
And Astra hasn't clearly demonstrated that yet.
For example, despite its incredible reasoning results, OpenAI reports Astra at about 41.4% on AutomationBench and 59.3% on Agents’ Last Exam—far from universal mastery of real-world work.
And that's the important distinction:
🧠 Passing an AGI benchmark ≠ proving AGI
💻 Being superhuman at some tasks ≠ being superhuman at most jobs
🤖 Powerful autonomy ≠ fully general intelligence
So maybe GPT-6 Astra isn't proof that AGI has arrived.
But it could be something historically important:
The point where it became genuinely difficult to agree that it hasn't.
What do you think?
Is GPT-6 Astra AGI—or are we moving the definition every time AI gets better?
