Netflix is cutting 1,000 jobs, and the bigger story might be what's happening with its audience.

The streaming giant is reducing its workforce by around 6%, its biggest round of layoffs since 2022.

But here's the interesting part.

Netflix's share of US television viewing has dropped from 8.8% to 7.8% over the past year, while YouTube has climbed above 14%.

That's a pretty significant shift.

Netflix isn't just competing with Disney+, Amazon, or traditional streaming platforms anymore. It's competing with YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and basically anyone who can keep people watching a screen.

And unlike Netflix, much of that content is free.

Cutting costs might help the company's margins, but the bigger challenge is winning back people's attention.

The streaming wars aren't really about who has the most movies anymore. They're about who gets the most hours of your day.

When was the last time you spent more time on Netflix than YouTube?
