I am VERY guilty of looking at something and immediately thinking, “I can do that myself.” 🤣 And sometimes, doing it yourself really can save you a ton of money.
But I think we’ve gotten into a habit of comparing the professional quote to the cost of materials and calling the difference our “savings.”
We forget about the tools we had to buy, the three extra trips to the hardware store, the material we accidentally ruined, the supplies we’ll probably never use again, the hours spent watching tutorials, the entire Saturday the project took, and what it could cost if we get something wrong.
That doesn’t mean DIY isn’t worth it. Sometimes you’re learning a skill you’ll use for years. Sometimes you already own everything you need. Sometimes the savings are HUGE. And sometimes you genuinely love doing it, which has value too.

There are so many financial decisions we expect young adults to make almost immediately: get a job, open a bank account, use credit, take out a loan, choose benefits, pay taxes, and maybe even start investing.
But knowing how to earn money and knowing how to manage it are two completely different skills.
I wish we spent more time teaching what these things actually mean BEFORE someone has to make decisions with real financial consequences.
And if you’re reading this at 28, 38, or 58 and realizing nobody taught you some of these things either, that’s exactly why I think these conversations matter.
Financial literacy isn’t knowing everything about money. It’s understanding enough to ask better questions and make more informed decisions.

Most of us remember to budget for the gifts. It’s everything else that can make the holiday season way more expensive than we expected.
Shipping, stocking stuffers, teacher gifts, school events, extra groceries when family visits, childcare over winter break, holiday parties, pet sitting, airport parking, wrapping supplies, traditions—and the takeout you order because you’ve been running errands for six hours and absolutely do not want to cook.
None of these expenses are necessarily a problem. The problem is when they never made it into the holiday budget in the first place.
Before the season gets busy, look beyond your gift list and think through what your family actually does during November and December. You probably won’t predict every expense, but even a small “we forgot something” buffer can give you some breathing room.

If investing feels intimidating, you are definitely not alone. Investing has its own language, and when you don’t understand the terms, the accounts, or what you’re actually supposed to DO with your money, it can feel safer to do nothing at all.
But you don’t have to become an investing expert overnight. You can start by learning what investing actually is, how risk works, why your timeline matters, what diversification means and the difference between opening an investment account and actually investing the money inside it.
Your first step doesn’t even have to be investing a dollar. It can simply be learning enough that you feel more confident asking questions and making decisions about your own money.

“We’ll figure it out later” isn’t always procrastination. Sometimes later is genuinely the only option you have.
Maybe you don’t have the money right now. Maybe you need more information. Maybe something else is more urgent. Or maybe you simply don’t have the capacity to deal with one more thing, and I think that distinction matters.
But there are also times when waiting quietly makes a financial problem more expensive or leaves us with fewer options. That doesn’t mean you have to fix everything today. Sometimes progress is getting the estimate, making the phone call, putting $25 aside, asking what your options are, or finally putting a date on the calendar to revisit it.
You don’t always need to solve the problem today. Sometimes the best thing you can do is make the problem a little easier for future-you to handle.
