Apple’s first foldable is barely a week old, and some owners are already dealing with a cracked screen.

Early iPhone Duo buyers have been reporting the same problem: a bright band of white pixels running from a point near the middle of the fold, sometimes right after hearing a crunch in the hinge. Some say it happened within hours of unboxing. Apple has confirmed the issue affects “a small number” of units and says anyone who’s affected should contact AppleCare for a replacement. One buyer reported getting a new phone straight away at an Apple Store.

The interesting part is how consistent the damage is. iFixit’s teardown points to a spot just below the cable gap, where several edges meet and the center support bar may not drop far enough, creating a stress hotspot. Apple hasn’t confirmed a cause, and the company says the defect shows up quickly, so units that have worked fine for several days are likely in the clear.

It’s also worth keeping perspective. This doesn’t appear to affect every device the way Bendgate or Antennagate did, and plenty of owners say theirs is working perfectly. First-generation foldables have a history of teething problems, and Apple’s hinge has more than 100 parts under a screen made of 10 ultra-thin layers.

With a $1,999 price tag and 28 more markets launching on October 30, how Apple handles this will shape confidence in the whole category.

Would you buy a first-generation foldable, or wait for version two? 🤔
