I am VERY guilty of looking at something and immediately thinking, “I can do that myself.” 🤣 And sometimes, doing it yourself really can save you a ton of money.

But I think we’ve gotten into a habit of comparing the professional quote to the cost of materials and calling the difference our “savings.”

We forget about the tools we had to buy, the three extra trips to the hardware store, the material we accidentally ruined, the supplies we’ll probably never use again, the hours spent watching tutorials, the entire Saturday the project took, and what it could cost if we get something wrong.

That doesn’t mean DIY isn’t worth it. Sometimes you’re learning a skill you’ll use for years. Sometimes you already own everything you need. Sometimes the savings are HUGE. And sometimes you genuinely love doing it, which has value too.

Retirement Savings Tip: Spend the least possible on needs.

One of the smartest ways to find more money for retirement savings is to take a closer look at what you're spending on everyday necessities.

When you need to replace something essential, spend as little as you can without sacrificing quality or safety.

A car is a perfect example. Buying more car than you need can put a serious strain on your finances. If it's time to replace yours, consider a reliable used car instead of a new one.

And don't stop there. Apply that same thinking to groceries, clothing, and other everyday expenses.

Remember, every dollar you don't spend unnecessarily is a dollar you can put toward your retirement savings and your future financial security.

We’ve finally hit 4 figures in our savings challenge !

With 3 months left in the year, I think I’ll hit about $1,400.

I also have finally decided what I’m going to use the money for!! I’ve been accepted to the 9+1 @nyrr program.

I’ll be running the 2028 NYC Marathon as long as I complete my qualifying races in 2027!

I’m going to use my savings to buy a new pair of running sneakers and pay for my 2027 races !!

Who’s joining me in October 👀 Drop HYSA in the comments and I’ll send you a list of my high savings recommendations so you can get started on the savings challenge in less than 10 minutes !
